It’s a well-known fact that video game enthusiasts are a notoriously patient bunch. Whether it’s eagerly waiting for the next big release or biding their time as they play through an open-world game, gamers are no strangers to waiting. But what happens when the wait is more like a decade-long hiatus? Well, that’s exactly what we’re talking about today, my friends. The rumors, the speculation, and the (few) confirmed announcements about Fallout 5, Red Dead Redemption 3, and other games that are likely to be released in the 2030s. So, sit back, grab a snack, and let’s talk about the future of video gaming. First up, the elephant in the room: Fallout 5. Bethesda confirmed that the next installment in the Fallout franchise is indeed in the works, but they also made it clear that they have two other major titles they need to focus on before they can start working on Fallout 5. Starfield, the studio’s first original IP in over 20 years, is a space-faring RPG that’s already been delayed into this year. And then there’s The Elder Scrolls 6, the highly-anticipated next entry in the popular franchise, which is still in pre-production and likely won’t see the light of day until the late 2020s or the 2030s. Todd Howard, the big cheese at Bethesda, has stated that Fallout 5 won’t be a focus for the studio until after The Elder Scrolls 6 is released. So, what does that mean for Fallout fans? It means you’ll probably be waiting until the 2030s for Fallout 5 to finally make its way to your console or PC.
Next up, Red Dead Redemption 3. This one hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but it’s a no-brainer considering the runaway success of its predecessors. Red Dead Redemption is considered one of Rockstar Games’ flagship franchises, and given the critical acclaim that Red Dead Redemption 2 received, it would be a shame if they didn’t release another sequel. In an interview with Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick, he referred to Red Dead as a franchise that never expires, leading many to believe that Red Dead Redemption 3 is indeed in the works. But, if we look at the pattern of previous Red Dead games and the gaps in between their releases, it’s clear that Rockstar Games is taking their time with each installment. It took six years between Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption, and eight years between Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. And given the high level of expectation that will be placed on Red Dead Redemption 3, it’s likely that Rockstar will take even more time to ensure that the next title is as good as it can be, meaning that we could be waiting until the 2030s for Red Dead Redemption 3. And let’s not forget, Rockstar Games has a few officially announced games in development, like the next Grand Theft Auto entry. It’s likely that we’ll see that before the decade turns over, but it could still push the release of Red Dead Redemption 3 into the 2030s. So, there you have it, folks. The future of video gaming is looking bright, but it’s also looking far, far away. But let’s not get too down about it. After all, there are still plenty of amazing games being released in the meantime. And who knows, by the time Fallout 5 and Red Dead Redemption 3 finally make their way to our screens, we’ll probably have a whole new set of hardware to play them on. And that’s something to look forward to, isn’t it?
