A 2012 trip to a Fayetteville, Arkansas, Walmart to pick up some milk turned out to be one for the history books.” Yes, you read that right, a trip to Walmart to pick up some milk ended up being a significant historical event. Well, not in the traditional sense of the word, but for Michael Skvarla, director of Penn State University’s Insect Identification Lab, it certainly was. As Skvarla walked into the Walmart, he saw a massive bug on the side of the building. Being the curious scientist he is, he promptly squished it, put it in his hand and carried it with him as he did the rest of his shopping. Imagine doing your weekly grocery shopping while holding a giant bug between your fingers – not exactly what most people would consider an enjoyable experience. But most people aren’t scientists.  Once he got home, Skvarla mounted the bug and promptly forgot about it for almost a decade. It wasn’t until fall of 2020 when he was teaching an online course on insect biodiversity and evolution that Skvarla realized it wasn’t what he originally thought. As he showed the bug to his students on a Zoom call, they figured out that it was, in fact, a super-rare giant lacewing. “We were watching what Dr. Skvarla saw under his microscope, and he’s talking about the features, and then just kinda stops,” one of his students, Codey Mathis, said. “We all realized together that the insect was not what it was labeled and was, in fact, a super-rare giant lacewing.” The bug that Skvarla had found at Walmart turned out to be a rare Jurassic-era flying insect, a giant lacewing known as Polystoechotes punctata. The bug’s wingspan was about 50 millimeters – nearly 2 inches, a span that made it clear that the insect was not an antlion, as Skvarla had originally thought. Skvarla and his team conducted molecular analyses on the bug and published their research on the specimen in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington in November 2020. The discovery of the Arkansas specimen “represents a new state record and the first specimen recorded in Arkansas,” Skvarla wrote in the paper. Giant lacewings were once found across the entire continent, but by the 1950s, the insect had disappeared in the eastern part of North America. The reasons for their disappearance are still unknown, with some theories suggesting that it may have been due to increasing light pollution or new predators, and others speculating that new earthworms introduced into the environment may have changed the soil’s composition. Skvarla’s discovery of the Arkansas specimen provides new insight into the species and its distribution, shedding light on what has remained a mystery for many years. The discovery also highlights the importance of being observant and curious, even in the most mundane of places. In a world of instant gratification and impulsive opinions, where people react without thinking and proudly display their ignorance for all to see, we’ve lost sight of the value of taking the time to read and educate ourselves. Welcome to a world where reading has become an afterthought, and where people have strong opinions on articles they’ve never even taken the time to read. I recently had the displeasure to witness a steady stream of people too lazy to read even the title of an article, let alone the entire article itself, allowing themselves to feel educated enough to write their own paragraph long posts in response after just a mere glance at a header image. Triggered by the latest outrage, they go on rants and post angry comments without taking the time to research or understand the issue at hand. Patting themselves on the back after, as if they had just won some one-sided justice war of words all on their own, all while arguing the same points the writer, me, was trying to make.  How do you argue with a person like that? You are compelled to leave them be like a petulant child who just threw a tantrum over your attempt to fix their shoes that were on the wrong feet. Further meddling will only incite further complaints from them, even though you are aware that they are in the wrong. The child, however, feels a sense of achievement. It’s a world where attention spans are shorter than a goldfish’s, and where we’re bombarded with information. It’s ironic, really. Some people have become so attached to their smartphones yet they can barely take the time to read anything longer than a tweet. And so, they form opinions based on headlines and summaries, and they proudly share their thoughts with the world.   But let’s be honest, it’s not really their fault. They’ve become so overwhelmed that they’ve lost the ability to focus, to read and to understand. They’re quick to judge an article without knowing the alignment or views of the writer, and without taking the time to consider the possibility that the writer might hold the same views as them. Or is it that our present-day society, where everyone has the means to broadcast themselves to the world, has bred a generation of self-absorbed individuals and they believe they are above everyone else’s beliefs and views? Dear reader, you are different. You’ve taken the time to read this article, and for that, I thank you. You’ve shown that you’re willing to take the time to educate yourself, and that you value informed opinions. You understand that forming opinions based on ignorance is not only harmful to personal growth, but it’s also dangerous for society. The current divide the world is going through is a testament to the damaging effects of uninformed opinions, not taking the time to read and having a hairpin trigger. We’re seeing a world where people are shouting past each other, where opinions are formed without understanding, and where we’re losing sight of the importance of knowledge and understanding. Oh boy, do we have some big steam deck news today! The major new stable steam deck client update that’s just been released. To get this update, all you have to do is head to your system settings and check for updates. It might take a couple of tries, but once it’s downloaded, you’ll need to reboot and voila! You’re all set to enjoy all the latest beta updates in one convenient package. One of the best updates, in my opinion, is the change to the launch options user interface for games. If you have multiple ways to launch a game, you can now make a choice and stick with it, with the option to change it back at any time. It’s a small change, but it makes a big difference. And for those of you with huge steam libraries, there have been some optimizations to make the experience smoother and less sluggish. No more waiting around for steam to decide what game you want to play next! Another great feature is the addition of pinned notifications in the quick access notifications menu. You won’t miss any important messages, trade offers, or offline chats ever again! And for those of you who love to dock your steam deck up to a TV, there have been some user interface improvements for higher resolutions and the on-screen keyboard now has the option to move and even has up and down arrow keys. It’s the little things that make the biggest impact! And last but not least, there are loads of steam input changes, including the ability to preview configurations before applying them, support for new controllers like the Armorax Pro Gamepad and the Thrustmaster e-swap Pro controller, and improved layout previews for controllers like the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. Plus, they’ve fixed various bugs in desktop mode, the steam library, and the new Big Picture Mode, which is now the default for desktop. It may not be any major new features, but it’s the small things that add up to make the experience better or worse, and valve is focusing on every detail to make it the best it can be. Now, on to the other major piece of news. Ubisoft has updated Ubisoft connect, and as a result, any games that use it will no longer run. This includes popular titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watchdogs Legion, and The Division 2. But don’t worry, the proton developers are looking into the issue and have already updated the bleeding edge beta of proton experimentals, which should solve the problem. Just be careful, as the bleeding edge beta hasn’t had much testing yet and could come with other problems.
