It’s Dangerous to Go Alone: The Legend of Zelda Movie is a Reality

Nintendo has finally decided to jump into the live-action movie business, bringing the beloved Legend of Zelda to the big screen. It’s been a saga of hope and rumor, but today we have official confirmation – and a few tantalizing details to stoke the fire of anticipation.

In a post addressed to the Nintendo investors’ collective, the news was shared, though they decided to keep things under wraps for now, leaving us with just a taste of what’s to come. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Avi Arad, the chairman of Arad Productions and a Marvel Studios veteran, are teaming up to bring the Hero of Time to life.

Now, Arad is no stranger to success; he’s got a proven track record, with recent hits like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Into the Spider-Verse under his belt. He’s also got a slew of upcoming projects, including Kraven the Hunter and the Borderlands movie, so it’s safe to say we’re in capable hands.

In the director’s chair, we’ve got Wes Ball, the visionary behind The Maze Runner series. And for those of you wondering where you’ll catch the flick, Sony Pictures Entertainment is stepping in with theatrical distribution and a fat wallet to co-finance the adventure.

As for the script, Deadline Hollywood reports that Derek Connolly, known for his work on Jurassic World, is the wordsmith behind the scenes. It’s still early days, and development is just starting, but according to a tweet/X post from Miyamoto, this project has been simmering on the back burner for “many years now.”

Now, rewind a bit. Earlier this year, rumors had us all aflutter about a live-action Legend of Zelda movie. However, at the time, Universal and Illumination were the names being tossed around, not Sony. The speculations were stoked by the Tears of the Kingdom developers themselves, expressing their “interest” in making a Zelda movie following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But as Eiji Aonuma wisely pointed out, being interested doesn’t necessarily make it happen. Remember that Netflix series rumor that got fans all worked up? It ended up as just a mirage on the desert of the internet.

In an interesting twist, unlike the Mario movie, which was an animated delight, this Zelda film will be a live-action adventure. That means we’re about to embark on a casting rollercoaster as we wonder who will be the chosen ones to bring Link, Zelda, Ganon, and others to life. The Super Mario Bros. Movie faced its fair share of pre-release scrutiny over the choice of Chris Pratt as Mario. So, brace yourselves; a Zelda film is bound to face similar fan speculation – even if Link remains the strong, silent type, as in the games.

Now, on to the most crucial question: which Zelda storyline will this movie explore? Well, that’s where the Triforce of Mystery comes into play. We’re left in suspense about whether they’ll adapt an existing tale or forge a new path in the world of Hyrule. There’s a chance they might dive into the acclaimed world of Breath of the Wild, potentially setting the stage for a sequel in Tears of the Kingdom. But, alas, dear adventurers, we must bide our time and wait for Nintendo to bestow upon us the sacred scroll of updates. The legend is about to unfold on the silver screen, and we’re all ears for the tales yet to be told.
